The Englishman reads more newspapers than anyone else in the world. Nearly everyone in Britain buys a morning paper before he gets on to a bus or train to go to work.
On the trains, you can't see people's faces: you can only see a line of newspapers. You think that each man's reading his own paper; but he's usually found the newspaper of the man next to him more interesting, and is reading it over the other man's shoulder. People who haven't bought newspapers do the same thing: they read the front pages of other people's papers.
Britain's got newspapers for everyone. The Times and The Guardian are bought by the most educated people: they're called the ' quality ' papers. They always have a lot of pages about the theatre, the cinema, books and music, and they're written in very good English. Businessmen usually buy The Financial Times,a paper that's all about money.
A lot of middle-class people read The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail and The Daily Express. The Daily Telegraph always has a lot of news; the other two papers have less news and more photos. All three papers like to help the Conservative Party.
The Daily Mirror and The Sun have a lot of photos and are written in very easy English. They're read by the working-classes and usually like to help the Labour Party. Foreigners buy them because they understand them more easily.
The best papers are the Sunday papers — The Sunday Times and The Observer. They tell you more about what's happening in the world than any of the other papers. But a lot of British people buy The People or The News of the World on Sundays. These are newspapers that tell the worst things that are happening in Britain. There are always stories about husbands who have left their wives or wives who have killed their husbands.
Most big British newspapers and magazines come from offices in or near Fleet Street in London. If you go into one of the pubs in Fleet Street, you can always hear journalists who are talking about the stories that they've just written.
British newspapers can say what they want to say. They can be rude about the Queen or about the government, and every paper has a page where it tells you what it thinks about the news. This is called the 'leader'. And — most important for the people who read the paper on a train — every paper has a crossword.
