If you get on to a bus in London, the bus conductor and the driver will Drobablv be West Indians. If you go to see a doctor, perhaps he'll be an Indian. If you go to a restaurant, the waiter will speak with an Italian or Spanish accent. If you buy vegetables, the greengrocer will possibly be a Cypriot. They all speak English. . . but each speaks a different English!
A lot of new people have come to live in Britain in the last hundred years. In the Nineteenth Century, most of them were Irishmen who came to work. But the British have always tried to help people who have run away from bad governments, and, since 1900, a lot of people have come because they've had to leave their countries. In the last war, people came from nearly every country in Europe. Some of them went back to their own countries after the war; but others liked Britain and stayed there.
Since the war, thousands of people have come from the countries that were once British and have now got their owngovemments. These people are often very poor; but they speak English and they've got British nationality, so they come to work and live in Britain. There are Chinese from Hong Kong, West Indians, Africans, Cypriots, Maltese, Indians, Pakistanis, Malaysians — people from all the countries of the British Commonwealth. A lot of people have come from Europe, too : Spaniards, Portuguese, Italians and Greeks.
So many people wanted to come that there weren't enough houses for them all; so, since 1965, many fewer have been allowed to come into the country.
Because all these people have arrived in the last twenty years, Britain's changed a lot. There are now Indian and Chinese restaurants in even the smallest towns. Cypriots like to have small shops and cafes, so a lot of the greengrocer's and dairies and fish-and-chip shops now belong to Cypriots. The West Indians work as bus drivers and conductors, as train drivers, porters and nurses. The Spanish, Portuguese and Italians work in hotels and restaurants. Pakistanis often work in factories, Indians in government offices.
There are large areas in Bradford, a town in the North of England, where only Pakistanis live. In Soho, in London, there's a large Chinese area. But there are also areas like Notting Hill in London where people of all nationalities and colours live happily together. Sometimes, you can't see anybody English!
All these people have brought a little from their own countries with them, and have made Britain more interesting. The West Indians and the Indians have brought their music, the Africans have brought their art, and every nationality has got its own restaurants. There's even a party in the streets of Soho every year when the Chinese New Year begins!
For some of the new people, it isn't easy to live in Britain. There are offices that help these people and look after anyone who's very poor. And nobody in Britain's allowed to be rude about anyone's colour or nationality: if you are, you can go to prison!
