British food isn't as bad as some people say. It's sometimes very bad in cheap restaurants, but the food that the British eat at home is usually good and well-cooked.
The British eat three meals every day. Breakfast in Great Britain is much bigger than breakfast in other countries: they eat fruit or a cereal; then they eat eggs and bacon; then they eat toast.
People who work in offices don't often have much lunch: they eat a sandwich in a pub or sandwich bar. But, on Sundays, everyone has a big lunch: they eat beef, mutton, chicken or pork, with a lot of vegetables.
Families with young children have tea at five o'clock: they eat sandwiches and cakes and drink tea. But when the children are older, a family doesn't usually have tea. They have a cup of tea at three o'clock, and then have dinner in the evening.
The British don't drink much wine. They sometimes drink water with their meals — but, in the North of England, they like to drink tea while they're eating. Some Englishmen drink ten cups of tea every day!
The most usual meat courses in Britain are pies and stews. A pie's like a cake with meat in it; a stew's made from meat and vegetables, that are cooked for a long time.
The most usual desserts are puddings. These are like cakes, but are much heavier.
There are three kinds of restaurant in Britain. The kind the British like best is the fish — and — chip shop, where they can buy their favourite meal — fried fish and chips. You can eat your meal in the shop, but most people buy the fish and chips to take home. Young people often buy chips and eat them in the street.
There area lot of small, cheap restaurants, that are called cafe's. The food in them is often very bad; but the British workman likes to go to them to have a quick meal. They usually serve fried eggs, fried sausages, fried steak, fried bacon or fried chicken!
The food in the good restaurants is much better. But when the Englishman goes out to eat in a restaurant, he likes to eat Italian, Indian or Chinese food. In London, you can eat food from everywhere in the world. . . but you won't find many good restaurants that serve English food !
Some of the most interesting restaurants are in Soho, in London, where there's a big Chinese area. In this area, all the notices are written in Chinese. . .and so are the menus in the restaurants. When an Englishman orders his meal, he never knows what he's going to eat!
