The lack of clean water in cities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>URBANISATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0<em>The United Nations Human Development Report 1990<\/em>\u00a0has called this &#8216;the century of the great urban explosion&#8217;.<br \/>\nBetween 1950 and 1985 the number of people living in cities in the world\u00a0 nearly_tripled. In the developing world,<br \/>\nit quadrupled\u2014from less than 300 million lo about 1.2 billion<strong>. In Africa<\/strong>, the population of the larger cities increased more\u00a0 than sevenfold over this period.<\/p>\n<p>B\u00a0\u00a0 Although the rate of city growth is expected to slow in the future, the absolute numbers added each year will continue to grow.\u00a0<strong>Most of this growth<\/strong>\u2014as much as two-thirds in many Asian and Latin American cities\u2014 will come from natural increase (i.e. the excess of births over deaths) of populations already in cities.<br \/>\nThe rest will come from rural-urban migration (in pan a result of high rural fertility pulling pressure on agricultural livelihoods) and the urbanisation of currently rural areas.<\/p>\n<p>C\u00a0 In future, the urban population of the developing countries is expected to grow by nearly another billion in the next fifteen years. By 2015.\u00a0<strong>half\u00a0<\/strong>the developing world&#8217;s people will live in urban areas. Growth rates will be fastest in Africa, though absolute growth will be\u00a0<strong>greatest in Asia<\/strong>, where cities will gain 500 million inhabitants between 1985 and the turn of the century.<\/p>\n<p>D\u00a0\u00a0<strong>An increasing proportion of the urbanised population will<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>be living in huge cities<\/strong>. The number of cities with a million or more inhabitants in developing countries was only 28 in 1950. By 1989 there were 125, and there will be a projected 277 in the year 2000. Africa had only one such city in 1950. By\u00a0 2000 Africa could have 60 cities of a million or more.<\/p>\n<p>E\u00a0 However,\u00a0<strong>urban growth in developing countries has not been evenly distributed between all cities,\u00a0<\/strong>in most countries one or two\u00a0<strong>giant cities<\/strong>\u00a0have grown out of all proportion, cornering the lion&#8217;s share of investment industry and\u00a0<strong>government\u00a0 spending\u2014but also creating problems<\/strong>\u00a0of congestion, squalor and unrest.<\/p>\n<p>F\u00a0 In 1970. only\u00a0<strong>13 per cent of the urban population of developing countries lived in cities with more than four million people.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>By 2025,<\/strong>\u00a0such cities are expected to house 28 per cent of town dwellers.\u00a0<strong>While many northern cities<\/strong>\u00a0such as London or Paris have\u00a0<strong>leveled out<\/strong>\u00a0or reduced their populations, the dominant cities of\u00a0<strong>developing countries<\/strong>\u00a0have\u00a0<strong>grown exponentially<\/strong>. The populations of\u00a0<strong>Tehran<\/strong><strong>, Karachi and Manila<\/strong>\u00a0grew at 5 per cent or more a year in the 1970s, and those of\u00a0<strong>Delhi<\/strong><strong>, Mexico<\/strong><strong>\u00a0City, Seoul, Sao Paolo<\/strong>\u00a0and Jakarta at between 4 and 5 per cent. A number of cities may grow to\u00a0<strong>gigantic size. Mexico City<\/strong>, which had a population of\u00a0<strong>15 million in 1980<\/strong>, \u00a0may grow to nearly\u00a0<strong>25 million by the year 2000.
